SORORII

(Cleveland, Ohio)

Sororii is a female-led band featuring Afro-Colombian cellist Carolina Borja, and bassoonist Arleigh Savage.  Sororii formed in 2021 during the height of the pandemic and with the spirit to reclaim sisterhood and explore feminine voices across cultures.

Their music blends warm, melodic bassoon lines, plucked and strummed cello, and voice; creating instrumental grooves with underlying world, latin, and afro beats.

Their first major project, Esperanza: a cross- cultural collaboration is NOW AVAILABLE  in Bandcamp.  They intend this work to be a body of work that models new leadership for this turbulent times of societal fragmentation. The spirit of the album evocates ancestry, female voices, and music expressions from around the world.

Michigan born bassoonist Arleigh Savage holds music performance degrees from Michigan State University and the Cleveland Institute of Music.  She lives in Cleveland, OH and is the adjunct professor of bassoon at Cleveland State University and member of the Cleveland Pops and Lancaster Festival Orchestras and the Youngstown Symphony.  Arleigh loves splitting her time between classical music and cross-over music projects like Sororii.  Other small-ensemble playing includes her time as bassoonist with the North Coast Winds, Cleveland’s premiere independent wind quintet, who celebrated their 10th anniversary in 2024.

Carolina Borja is an Afro-Colombian world musician, composer and educator. Over the past decade, Carolina has been exploring the cello as an ever expanding and versatile instrument in the realm of folk fusion and world music bands, interdisciplinary groups of artists and dance companies. Her most current work reflects an avid search for her roots and creativity, together with her role as a woman of the African diaspora.
